The Mormons were among the first to petition Congress to construct the railroad and provided much of the labor and capital used in its construction, holding contracts for some of the surveying on the Union Pacific and the grading on both Central Pacific and Union Pacific through Utah. This circular for of railroad and highway bridges was received just prior to the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit, Utah.
